I landed in Rochester, NY early for a business trip with training starting the following day. When I arrived in the town of Watkins Glen, I was surprised and slightly disappointed. There was no landscape in the area that could have come close to matching what I saw online during my research. It was a town no different than so many others with shops, a few stop lights and a couple of grassy parks, but nothing that came close to the appearnce of what I was there for. I approached a traffic light with a fast food restaurant on the far right corner of the intersection, waiting for the light to turn green when I looked around. To my right, there appeared to be a large rocky wall and a parking lot. That's when I noticed the gate and the sign for the park that was even with the front of my rental car. I accessed the parking lot as many were leaving, not sure what to expect. Being in the middle of town, I was certain I was in the wrong place, but decided to check it out anyway.
I walked to the end of the parking lot, climbed the stairs, crossed over a stone bridge and froze half way across Sentry Bridge to stare at the stunning world I had just crossed over into. Waterfalll after waterfall, it felt like the beauty would never end. I stayed on the Gorge Trail to an area just past Rainbow Falls before turning around. As I returned to the parking area it became a misty evening which added an amazingly dramatic setting.
I've only returned once since that first visit and I plan on returning many times in the future. This is truly the most amazing mile and a half I've ever seen.
